The Machinists Union joined U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and other members of Congress to outline the principles that should guide the renegotiation NAFTA ahead of the Mexican economy minister’s visit to Washington.

We need a new NAFTA that protects workers instead of continuing to outsource jobs and lower wages.

The IAM and other members of Congress are demanding an end to outsourcing by fighting for strong, enforceable labor standards within a renegotiated NAFTA. Low wages, a lack of independent unions, and an inability for workers to collectively bargain in Mexico have led to the outsourcing of good-paying American jobs to Mexico and low wage growth.
“IAM members know how important trade is to our jobs and to our economy” said Owen Herrnstadt, IAM Chief of Staff to the International President and Director of Trade and Globalization. “After all, IAM members produce, manufacture, service, assemble, and transport the goods that make up the global economy. IAM members know when trade works and IAM members know when trade doesn’t work.”

Any proposed NAFTA deal would need to be finished by late August in order to be signed before the end of the year.
